Childhood obesity is on the rise in Australia. Since 1995, obesity rates among boys across all age groups have doubled, while obesity rates among girls aged 13–17 have increased from 12% to 20%.
What is Contributing to Childhood Obesity?
A number of lifestyle and environmental factors have contributed to the rise in childhood obesity, including:
- Sedentary lifestyles
- Lack of active outdoor play due to increased screen time and video games
- Eating meals in front of the television instead of at the dinner table
- Undisciplined snacking habits when children are home alone
- Reliance on frozen or fast foods due to busy family schedules
- Television advertising encouraging unhealthy food choices
- Upsized fast-food meals leading to excessive calorie intake
Childhood obesity is now one of the most common health problems affecting children worldwide, not just in Australia.
Unfortunately, overweight children may also experience bullying, teasing, and low self-esteem, which can impact their emotional wellbeing and mental health.
Dr Brooklyn Storme, a psychologist specialising in children’s health, can assist with the emotional effects associated with obesity, including bullying and self-esteem concerns. Dr Storme works at the Duff Street Wellness Centre, and appointments may be bulk billed under certain conditions.
What Can You Do?
If your child is overweight, consider the following healthy lifestyle changes:
- Encourage participation in active sports and physical activities
- Limit screen time on computers, phones, and tablets
- Eat meals together at the dinner table without television distractions
- Go for daily walks and explore the neighbourhood together
- Read food labels carefully
- Plan grocery shopping and meals in advance
If you have concerns about your child’s eating habits or overall health, speak with one of our GPs for support, guidance, and professional advice.
