Looking after a sick child

September 7, 2016 by HeartBeat Digital

If you think your child is unwell, please call Duff Street Medical Centre on 5995 4988 to make an appointment. Your doctor can provide advice on managing your child’s illness and prescribe medications if required.

Looking after a sick child can be stressful, exhausting, and emotionally draining. Make things as manageable as possible by resting whenever you can and asking someone else to help care for your child so you can take a break when needed.

Sick children often become very tired and need plenty of rest. Encourage your child to sleep or rest whenever they need to. Holding their hand or lying beside them can help provide comfort and reassurance.

If you have a baby, it is recommended that you never fall asleep with a sick baby on the couch, even if you are both exhausted, as this increases the risk of cot death.

Whether your child is resting in bed or on the couch, the following tips may help them feel more comfortable:

  • Keep the room well ventilated and avoid overheating the space
  • Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids
  • Do not worry too much about food during the first day unless they are hungry
  • Offer nutritious drinks such as milk and small amounts of food when they feel ready
  • Provide quiet activities, stories, comfort, and company

Minor Accidents

Duff Street Medical Centre has a fully equipped 3-bed treatment room to assist with minor accidents and injuries, such as cuts or foreign objects trapped in the nose or ear.

If this is your situation, please advise reception when you call.
