The Healthy Kids 4 Year Old Check-Up is a positive health assessment for pre-school children across Australia. The aim of the check is to improve the health and wellbeing of Australian children while promoting the early detection of lifestyle risk factors, delayed development, or illness.
The assessment also provides an opportunity for early intervention strategies to help ensure children are fit, healthy, and ready to learn when they begin school.
Topics covered in the check include:
- Height and weight
- Eyesight and hearing
- Allergies
- Oral health
- Behaviour
- Speech
- Toileting
It is also an excellent opportunity for parents or guardians to discuss any questions or concerns regarding their child’s development.
The 4 Year Old Check is performed by one of our experienced practice nurses once children have reached their 4th birthday. It is commonly completed in conjunction with their 4 year old immunisations.
Please note that 3.5 year old health checks completed by your local maternal health nurse are different and do not affect eligibility for this assessment.
As of July 2011, families receiving Centrelink income support benefits are required by the Government to complete the 4 Year Old Healthy Kids Check in order to receive the end-of-year Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement.
This requirement helps ensure children are checked for potential health concerns such as hearing or sight impairments before starting school.
Please speak with your GP or practice nurse for more information.
